Panasonic Lumix TS5

Panasonic continues to upgrade its widely popular underwater Lumix line this year with new models. The Lumix TS5 is the company’s new flagship rugged camera.

Like its predecessors, the Lumix TS5 has a rugged waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freezeproof body, making it an ideal camera to use for underwater shots. But this year the company has also followed the lead of other manufacturers (notably Olympus) and added a crushproof rating to this camera. The TS5 is now waterproof to 43 feet, shockproof to falls from up to 6.6 feet, freezeproof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, dustproof and crushproof to forces up to 220lb (100kg) of force.

Features of the Panasonic Lumix TS5
In addition to the rugged design protections mentioned above, the Panasonic Lumix DMC –TS5 offers the following features:

• 16.1 MP 1/2.33-inch High Sensitivity MOS Sensor
• 4.6x optical zoom (35mm camera equivalent: 28-128mm)
• 3-inch 460K-dot LCD screen with a 100% field of view
• 1920 x 1080 60p Full HD Video Recording
• Built-in Wi-Fi for instant online sharing and remote control from your smartphone
• Measures 4.3 x 1.14 x 2.6 inches and weighs only 7.5 ounces
• With features like Intelligent Auto Mode, GPS, compass, altimeter and barometer features
• Improve your shots with Sonic Speed Auto Focus, Creative Panorama Shots and more
• With 12 Creative Control functions
• Comes in a variety of colors to adapt to your changing styles

Pros and Cons of the Panasonic Lumix DMC –TS5

1. The Panasonic Lumix DMC –TS5 is an ideal camera to use for pretty much any type of sports. It’s great not just for water sports but also for any active sports such as skiing, diving, trekking and mountaineering.

2. This camera doesn’t require a special waterproof casing like many of today’s action cams, but instead the entire camera body is sealed to make it waterproof, freezeproof, shockproof, dustproof and crushproof.

3. The ability to connect via Wi-Fi and Near Field Communication makes this camera model efficient in transferring files directly to your PC or your Mac. No need to use wires or connect to the web to transfer photos and videos, and you can also control the camera from your smartphone.

4. It has plenty of features that make taking photos and videos easy. With features like Intelligent Auto Mode, you can take shots in a hurry with no need to make time-consuming adjustments.

There’s really nothing to dislike about this camera, as it offers an amazing array of functionality and durability and would be a great waterproof camera for anyone. But not everyone needs all the features packed into this little camera. You’re going to pay more for the TS5 than other comparable models that don’t have Wi-Fi, GPS and remote access through a smartphone, and as with any camera offering these features, the TS5 will drain your battery more rapidly when you use these options.

If you don’t need all of these additional features for remote access, a better choice might be the Panasonic Lumix TS25. It offers many of the same photographic options without extras such as Wi-Fi, and is therefore able to offer a lower selling price.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC –TS5A is a waterproof camera that you will enjoy taking anywhere you go. With its impressive design that allows it to withstand the elements, it’s an ideal camera to use in sports, outdoor activities and in demanding and tough environments. It also has practical features and impressive connectivity to easy transfer and edit data. But there are less expensive waterproof cameras on the market without features such as Wi-Fi, so if you don’t need the ability to upload instantly, you might want to consider one of these instead.

New Nikon Waterproof AW110

new nikon waterproof coolpix aw110It looks like Nikon’s got another winner on its hands with the new waterproof AW110.

Nikon’s Coolpix AW100, released in mid-2011, marked the camera manufacturer’s return to building underwater cameras. Their 35mm Nikonos underwater cameras were the choice of professional scuba divers for years, but when digital cameras became all the rage, Nikon stopped production, and it wasn’t until the AW100 that they returned to the world of waterproof cameras. The Coolpix AW100 was an instant hit, and the upgraded AW110 is sure to be even more popular.

Like its successor, the AW110 is waterproof, shockproof and freeze proof so you can take it anywhere. But the new improved model includes built-in Wi-Fi for easy photo sharing and increases its underwater depth rating to 59 feet, making it the most scuba-friendly compact among its mainstream rugged camera competitors.

What are the features of the Nikon Coolpix AW 110?
• Measures a compact 4.33 x 2.56 x .98 inches
• Weighs only 6.81 oz. (incl. battery)
• Waterproof to 59 feet, shockproof from a height of 6.6 feet and freezeproof down to temperatures of 14 degrees Fahrenheit
• Built with a Wi-Fi connectivity so you can share and transfer files easier and faster
• With GPS, compass, mapping features and POI or points of interest as you create your photo journal for your trip.
• Capable of recording 1080p full high definition along with crisp stereo sound
• Connects to any HDMI capable device like TV, computer or a projector
• Available in four colors – camouflage, orange, black and blue

What are the pros and cons of using the Nikon Coolpix AW 110?
1. Since the Nikon Coolpix AW 110 has all the extreme features built –in it may be the ideal camera that anyone who enjoys an active lifestyle should use. It has the farthest depths that an ordinary digital camera without a waterproof case can go and still capture high definition shots. Other cameras would blur, take out of focus images and just spoil the view but the Nikon Coolpix AW 110 will stay clear thanks to its compact construction and useful features.
2. The GPS and tagging capabilities are also helpful when you want to create a diary or a photo album of your recent trip to impress family and friends. This camera will make you remember you’ve been there and had great fun!
3. This camera will also record high definition movies with its full 1080p HD capabilities. It can even capture great audio too with its stereo sound features.
4. Since it has Wi-Fi connectivity, you can easily connect to your PC or to your Mac computer with the freedom of wires. You can instantly transfer your files after you take them so you may edit and send them to friends ASAP.

It’s still too early for us to discuss disadvantages since this camera has not yet hit the mainstream market. But unless Nikon does something drastically different (and stupid) from the AW100, it’s unlikely that there will be much to complain about with this camera. The AW100 has been an extremely popular camera due to its rugged design and excellent picture quality. It also has one of the best door locking mechanisms of any of the rugged cameras, making it more reliable.

The Nikon Coolpix AW 110 is an ideal camera to use outdoors, underwater, in very cold places and in dusty and humid environments. With its durable and efficient tight housing, it’s a reliable camera for active sports.

It’s a great example of what you can do with time-lapse photos.

Choosing a Nikon Digital Waterproof Camera

nikon digital waterproof cameraFor many years, Nikon was the top name in underwater cameras with their Nikonos series of film cameras. But when the digital age came along, Nikon stopped producing the Nikonos. The company has only recently gotten back into the underwater camera game. Today there are two Nikon waterproof digital cameras – the Nikon Coolpix AW100, released in 2011 and the Nikon Coolpix S30, released in 2012. If you’re set on a Nikon digital waterproof camera, here’s what you should know about these two models.

The tagline for each of these cameras sums up their differences quite succinctly. Nikon says the AW100 is “born to be extreme” and the S30 is for “non-stop family fun.” Indeed, these cameras are made to appeal to two very different markets.

Nikon Coolpix AW100

The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is designed for outdoor enthusiasts who want a rugged camera with great optics and travel-friendly features such as GPS. And if you select high-speed movie mode, you can view the video in slow motion or fast motion. In addition, the Coolpix AW100 comes with 19 different scene settings to help you get the perfect shot, from the typical portrait and sports modes to special settings for fireworks and underwater shots. The camera also performs well in low-light situations. If you’re looking for Nikon’s top-of-the-line waterproof camera, this is it.

Panasonic TS4 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DSC-TS4 is the next generation of the hugely popular DSC-TS3. Panasonic has kept the best features of the waterproof and shockproof TS3 and added more creative controls to the new model. This is a great camera for underwater and all-around use. Here’s why.

Panasonsic TS4 Features
The TS4 is built for outdoor adventures. It’s waterproof to 40 (12m) feet, shockproof to 6.6 feet (2m), freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 degrees C) and dustproof. That means you won’t need to worry about accidentally dropping this camera or having it freeze up while taking photos on the ski slopes. And it’s compact, so you can stick it in your pocket and take it just about anywhere.

Since it’s designed with sports and travel in mind, the Lumix TS4 comes equipped with GPS, compass, altimeter and a barometer to show and record altitude, barometric pressure and orientation data. You can even use the barometer as an indicator for depth underwater. The smart electronics in this camera also will automatically adjust the camera’s time to the local time wherever you are, so you won’t need to adjust it when you travel across country or go abroad.

Of course, a camera with a lot of fancy features and poor quality photos would be a bad investment, so Panasonic has made sure the TS4 lives up to consumer’s expectations. It has a 12.1 MP CCD sensor, a 28mm wide angle lens and a 4.6x optical zoom that can extend to 9.3x with enhanced resolution technology. That makes it easy to bring your subjects closer and still get exceptionally sharp images. See the sample images below. (Images copyright Panasonic)

panasonic ts4 review - digital zoom

The camera also makes it easy to capture action shots. It is equipped with Sonic Speed AF, which provides a quick startup time and focus time, and AF Tracking, a function that will continually track a subject until you press the shutter button. With AF Tracking, you won’t need to press the shutter button halfway repeatedly to readjust the focus of quick moving subjects like kids or pets.

Of course, you can also capture action on video with the Panasonic TS4. The camera can shoot full 1920 x 1080 HD video with one-touch ease, and you can take still photos while recording video. However, the photos will be recorded at 3.5 MP, regardless of whether you’ve set a higher resolution in the camera.

Shutterbugs who aren’t satisfied with just typical point-and-shoot photos will also enjoy some additional features offered by the TS4. The DMC-TS4 has added more manual controls than offered by its predecessor, the TS3. Users can now set their own shutter speed and aperture, a feature serious photographers will appreciate. You can also take 3D photos, shoot panorama images, or add a special miniature effect that defocuses the peripherals while emphasizing saturation and contrast to make the picture look like a diorama. There’s also a time lapse mode for shooting at intervals.

Who Should Buy the Panasonic TS4?
The TS4 is a great camera for anyone looking for an all-purpose camera that can stand up to the rigors of outdoor adventure. It’s equipped with high quality photo and video capabilities and extra features such as GPS that sports enthusiasts will enjoy. If you need a waterproof camera with all the extra features, the TS4 is definitely right for you. But if you simply want a high resolution waterproof camera that can take great photos, and you don’t need GPS and some of the other features in this camera, you might want to take a look at the cheaper Panasonic TS20 or the Olympus Stylus Tough 8010.

Nikon S30 Review

nikon s30 review intro imageThe Nikon Coolpix S30 is a 10.1 MP waterproof camera with 3x zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD and a host of options for creative fun. This camera S30 waterproof camera is geared toward budget-conscious shoppers and families who want a camera that everyone can use, even the youngest members of the clan.

The Coolpix S30 waterproof camera is from Nikon, a brand that has been trusted for generations when it comes to quality images. The Nikon Coolpix S30 is waterproof to 10 feet (3 meters) and is shockproof up to 2.6 feet as well, so you don’t need to worry too much about the kids dropping it. That makes it a great camera for playing around at the pool, the park, the playground, or anywhere you go.

How does the Nikon Coolpix S30 digital camera work?
You don’t need to be an expert photographer to take great photos on land or underwater with this camera. The Nikon S30 waterproof camera is designed for everyone to use. It has an easy-to-understand menu and large buttons that make it easy to shoot photos or videos or select the menu options you want. Nikon has also clearly separated the buttons so the ones on top are for turning the camera on or off and shooting images or video. The buttons on the back are for menu functions and other creative functions.

With the S30, you can record and edit home movies and vacation images in a snap. This waterproof camera also has amazing creative options that allow you to add a digital frame to your photos, highlight only one color in the image, turn points of light into starbursts and even add a voice message to a photo. You can also change the sounds associated with various camera functions to fun options such as a bird chirping or a dog barking. All of these features will obviously appeal to kids and folks with a sense of fun.

Many of the “fun” features included with this camera, such as adding digital borders, can easily be done with photo editing software, but for people who don’t like editing their photos, this is a quick alternative. One important thing to note when adding frames, however, is that the camera automatically changes the resolution to the lowest setting, which is 2 MP.

But the camera is a Nikon, after all, so users shouldn’t worry about the quality of the images when the highest resolution is selected. At 10 MP, the Nikon S30 does have lower resolution than some other waterproof cameras on the market, but 10 MP will still create great photos, even when printed up to small poster sizes. And it shoots full 720p HD video which you can review on the 2.7 inch monitor as soon as you record. Connectivity is also a snap with the Nikon Coolpix S30 waterproof camera; it can easily connect to high definition television, a computer monitor or a photo printer to print images as soon as you take them.

One drawback to image quality, however, can be the flash settings – the flash can only be set to auto or off. There is no manual way to turn it on. So occasionally you may find that the flash won’t fire in a low-light situation because the camera doesn’t think it’s quite dark enough to need the flash. This can result in dark, blurry photos unless you increase the natural light to improve the photo quality or decrease the existing light to trigger the flash.

Even with this limitation, however, the Nikon S30 is a great camera. For the price, you’re not going to find a better waterproof camera with HD video, especially one that can be used by both kids and adults.

Nikon S30 Pros:

  • Easy-to-use large buttons
  • Rugged enough to go almost anywhere
  • Underwater mode for good color
  • Many creative options and special effects
  • Priced right for families on a budget

Nikon S30 Cons:

  • Lower resolution and less rugged than some leading waterproof cameras

Sony TX200v Review

With the release of the 18.2 MP Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX200v, the camera manufacturer has jumped to the front of the pack of high-resolution point-and-shoot waterproof cameras. The latest Cyber-shot easily outpaces the resolution of the nearest competitor, the new Panasonic TS20 (which sports a 16.1 MP sensor), and can also claim the largest screen (3.3 inches) of any underwater camera. Add full-resolution continuous shooting at 10 frames per second to the equation and you can see why the Sony TX200v is going to be a popular camera with outdoor enthusiasts who want high resolution action shots.

Sony TX200v Features
The Sony TX200v is an ultra compact camera with a lot of features packed into its small body. It’s waterproof to 16 feet and dustproof for peace of mind when you’re outdoors. The 18.2 MP Exmor R CMOS sensor can capture crisp, sharp images and 1080p HD video with the Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens with a focal length (35mm equivalent) of 28-140mm and a 5x optical zoom.

What makes this camera particularly impressive, however, is not the ability to take one or two great quality shots, but the ability to shoot full 18.2 MP images in bursts of 10 frames per second. No other waterproof camera on the market comes close to this, not only because the Sony resolution is the highest in its class, but also because many cameras that offer 10fps continuous shooting do it at a lower resolution. (Note: If you’re buying this camera for its speedy high-resolution images, be sure to get a memory card that can handle the quick write time required. Look for a Class 10 micro SD card.)

Other impressive features of the Sony DSC-TX200v include a 3.3-inch OLED touch screen, high speed auto focus, ISO settings from 64 to 12800, and functions to help you get the best photos, such as Smile Shutter, Face Detection, Background Defocus, Anti-blink technology and motion detection. The TX200v also offers Natural Flash mode, which aims to improve the harsh lighting often seem in images shot with on-camera flash by adjusting the white balance for the subject and background.

GPS and Compass
And if you’re looking for a waterproof camera with GPS, you won’t be disappointed. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX200v has a built-in GPS and compass that will record location data as you shoot. Later, you can use the GPS information to track your journey and see your images in a path on Google Earth

More Images of the Sony TX200v

The Sony DSC-TX200v is a great camera for anyone wanting a waterproof camera to take fast action shots at full resolution. The large screen, wide-angle lens and high ISO ratings will make it great for just about any type of shooting. The only drawback to this camera is really the price, as its MSRP is higher than any of the other waterproof digital cameras on the market. But as there’s no comparison in speed and resolution, that shouldn’t deter outdoor photographers who need a camera that can capture images as fast as they can shoot.

Sony TX200v PROS
– highest resolution sensor of any waterproof compact camera
– large OLED screen
– full resolution continuous shooting at 10 fps

Sony TX200v CONS
– highest-priced waterproof camera on the market
– not shockproof or freezeproof like many rugged cameras

What’s the Best Underwater Camera for You?

What’s the best underwater camera? In 2011, the bestselling and best-rated waterproof shockproof digital camera on Amazon was the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3. But is this the camera for you? Choosing the perfect waterproof camera for you really depends on your needs. Are you a snorkeler who wants to take great photos on your vacation to Hawaii? A sports enthusiast who wants a camera to go with you on any type of outdoor adventure? A scuba diver who needs a camera that can go to 200 feet? Or maybe someone looking for an inexpensive second camera? Here are some of the bestselling, most popular and best-rated waterproof cameras separated into categories of users to help you find the best camera for you.

Best Underwater Camera for All-Around Use

The new model of the most popular waterproof camera in 2011

best underwater camera 2012 - panasonic lumix ts4The best underwater camera for everyday use and one that could easily serve as your primary all-purpose camera and camcorder is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4. This is a new waterproof camera for 2012 from Panasonic. Its previous incarnation, the DMC-TS3, was the best-rated and bestselling waterproof camera on Amazon in 2011, and the new TS4 is even better. The reason consumers love this camera is because it’s rugged and can go wherever you go. It’s waterproof to 40 feet, shockproof for falls from up to 6.6 feet, dustproof and freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

This Panasonic Lumix isn’t just tough, however; it’s popular because it shoots great photos and video. It has a 12.1 MP Hi-Speed CCD sensor for high resolution still images and the ability to shoot 1920 x 1080 full HD video in either AVCHD or MP4 format. For creative control, the TS4 allows users to adjust the shutter speed and aperture and offers automatic time lapse images and panoramic stitching. And if you’re taking it on an adventure, the TS4 comes complete with GPS, a compass, altimeter and barometer.

This is the best waterproof camera for anyone who only wants to own one camera that can go everywhere and do just about anything.

Best Underwater Camera for Hands-Free Shooting

best underwater cameras 2012 - gopro hero2 outdoor editionIf you want the best waterproof camera for hands-free shooting, there’s no better choice than the GoPro Hero2: Outdoor Edition. This is currently the most popular underwater hands-free camera on Amazon and it has a 4- out of 5-star average rating from more than 100 pleased customers. The GoPro series of cameras are designed for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who want to capture their adventures on film. You can strap this little camera to your helmet, surfboard, bike handlebars or just about anywhere else to capture 11 MP still photos or full (1080p) HD video. This camera measures only 3.9 x 3.9 x 9.6 inches and weighs a mere 1.7 pounds, so it’s easy a small companion to have along for your adventures.

The GoPro Hero2 is waterproof to 197 feet (60m) and capable of capturing 170-degree wide angle 1080p video and 11 megapixel photos at a rate of 10 photos per second. For hands-free shooting, the GoPro Hero2 is the best waterproof camera you can currently buy.

Best Budget Underwater Camera for Snorkeling

best underwater camera 2012 - fuji finepix xp30The Pansonic Lumix waterproof camera line offers some of the best underwater cameras available today, but you’ll pay a price to get these top-of-the-line cameras. A good alternative for snorkeling and other water sports is the Fuji FinePix XP30. Like the Lumix TS4, the FinePix is waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freezeproof, but not to the extremes of the Panasonic model. The FinePix is only waterproof to 16.5 feet (5 meters), but that still makes it a great camera for snorkeling.

It also features a 14-megapixel CCD sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, GPS tagging, panoramic mode and 720p HD video. At only 5.5 inches and 1.1 pounds, it’s also small enough to take just about anywhere or to slide into your luggage on your next vacation.

Best Underwater Camera For About $100

best underwater cameras under $100 -kodak sport c123As of this writing, the Kodak Sport C123 is one of the top 5 cameras in the underwater category on Amazon and is just a tad over $100 at $102.85 (Prices subject to change. See Amazon for the latest prices). You’ll pay about $125 right now for a different color, but that still makes the Sport C123 a good deal. And with a 3.5- out of 5-star rating from over 400 customers, this little camera has been tried and tested. The Sport C123 offers 12 MP resolution and a 2.6-inch LCD viewing screen. It’s only waterproof to 10 feet, but that’s plenty deep enough for most snorkeling and swimming, and it’s dustproof, too. This is not a camera you’d want as your primary photographic piece of equipment, but as a backup or an inexpensive way to capture photos underwater, the Kodak Sport C123 is the best waterproof camera about under $100.

Best Underwater Camera for Scuba Diving

Until recently, scuba divers basically had two options when taking photos underwater – get an expensive underwater housing for your SLR /DSLR, or use a waterproof compact camera that didn’t have the high resolution or creative controls offered by a DSLR. There’s still no underwater DSLR, but the SeaLife DC1400 is a good alternative at a great price.

best underwater cameras for scuba diving - sealife dc1400This is the best underwater camera for scuba divers who don’t want to spend thousands on a waterproof housing and strobes for their DSLR but want to capture great underwater photos. This camera can go to 200 feet underwater and allows users to set the ISO from 64 to 3200, select a shutter speed from 1 second to 1/2000 and manually adjust the white balance or choose from several settings. It comes with 6 underwater modes and 27 modes from shooting on dry land without the underwater housing.

The SeaLife DC1400 was introduced in late 2011 as the successor to the popular DC1200, which Sport Diver magazine selected as the Editor’s Pick for Underwater Cameras for New Photographers.

New Waterproof Lumix Camera Offers More Creative Control

new panasonic waterproof lumix camera DMC-TS4Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-TS3 has been one of the bestselling waterproof digital cameras on the market since it was released, but now Panasonic is taking their waterproof Lumix line to new levels by introducing the Lumix DMC-TS4.

The new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4 will give users more creative control than the earlier point-and-shoot Lumix cameras by allowing users to adjust the shutter speed and aperture. The TS4 also comes with new creative modes – Time Lapse Shot, Miniature Effect and Panorama Shot. With Time Lapse Shot, the user selects the start time, interval time and number of photos to shoot and the camera does the rest. The Miniature Effect mode emphasizes saturation and contrast while defocusing the peripheries of the image, making the photo look like a diorama. Videos recorded in Miniature Effect mode are played back in 10x fast forward, making the effect more comical. As the name suggest, Panorama Shot allows users to shoot a horizontal or vertical panoramic image by taking consecutive shots and overlaying the images to create a panoramic photo up to 360 degrees.

In addition, the latest waterproof Lumix camera from Panasonic comes with GPS, a compass, altimeter and barometer. The DMC-TS4 is bundled with a DVD that integrates the camera’s new GPS system with more than a million landmarks and 82 countries and regions. Users who geo tag their photos can automatically sort and play the images by location so they can literally trace their journey through photos.

These fancy features are in addition to many of the popular features found on earlier models of the waterproof Lumix camera series. Like its predecessor the DMC-TS3, the Lumix TS4 is rugged. The camera is waterproof to approximately 40 feet (12 meters), shockproof from falls up to 6.6 feet (2 meters), freezeproof to temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and dustproof. It has a Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR lens with a 4.6x optical zoom (equivalent to a 28-128mm 35mm lens), a 12.1 MP Hi-Speed CCD sensor, and the ability to shoot full-HD (1920 x 1080) video in both and MP4 formats.

The Panasonic LUMIX TS4 is available in orange, blue, black and silver options with a suggested retail price of $399.99.

Choosing and Underwater Point and Shoot Camera

It was not that long ago that the first digital waterproof camera entered the market. Now new waterproof shockproof digital cameras are being released every year. So how should you choose an underwater point and shoot camera? The first thing you need to do is figure out what you really need in a camera. Here are some questions to ask yourself.

How will you use your camera?
If you’re looking for an underwater point and shoot camera, it might seem obvious that you will be using your camera in water. But what type of water? Are you planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Great Barrier Reef where you want to take photos while snorkeling or scuba diving? Or are you getting something to use in your backyard swimming pool? Is this going to be your primary camera or a secondary one? The answer to these questions is important, as you might want to splurge on a higher-end camera like the Panasonic TS4 for a snorkeling trip to the Great Barrier Reef or for an all-purpose camera to take everywhere. But if you’re buying a secondary camera to use while swimming, going to the lake or visiting the local water park, you might want to save some money, get fewer features and select something like the Fujifilm XP30 or Nikon S30.

What feature is most important to you?
Are you buying your camera for its waterproof ability? Its shockproof features? The GPS function? Popular underwater point and shoot cameras offer various levels of toughness and a variety of different features. While most can withstand dust and freezing temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, they differ greatly in their waterproof and shockproof qualities. And some, like the new Sony TX200v, are waterproof but not shockproof. If you’re buying a waterproof camera for its GPS features, you may not be as concerned about these features, but consider whether you want something that can be dropped and survive from 2 feet or 6 feet.

How simple or complicated do you want your camera to be?
One of the least complicated underwater cameras on the market today is the Nikon Coolpix AW100. It’s designed to be easy enough for everyone, from kids to grandparents, to use. On the other end of the spectrum, the Panasonic TS4 and Nikon AW100 are packed with so many features, from panorama and 3D images to GPS and compasses, that you will need to take some time learning how to use all of these nifty gadgets.

What’s your budget?
Finally, you need to consider your budget. While you may love the 18.2 MP resolution and 3.3-inch LCD on the Sony TX200v, your bank account may not love the $500 price tag. So what features do you absolutely positively need in your camera? Are you willing to pay a little more for GPS? Or would you rather have higher resolution at a lower price? There are waterproof point and shoot cameras for every budget, so

Either option was pricey. But times have changed. While underwater housings for top-of-the line DSLRs can still set you back over $1000 for the case alone, not to mention the strobe lights you’ll need to get good underwater photos, there are much cheaper alternatives on the market for those who are just exploring underwater photography for the first time and can’t afford to invest thousands of dollars in equipment. Here are five affordable digital cameras for diving. All of these underwater cameras, along with the necessary underwater lights, can be purchased for under $1000.

And if you really like it, both Panasonic and Ikelite make underwater housings that will allow you to take this camera to deeper depths.

A Cheap Scuba Diving Camera: Intova CP9

cheap scuba diving camera - intova cp9Looking for a cheap scuba diving camera? New scuba divers are often dismayed to learn the high price of underwater cameras and housings, especially for digital SLRs. Fortunately, there are some inexpensive options if you’re just getting started in underwater photography or are planning to get certified on vacation and want a camera to record your adventures.

One of the cheapest options for a digital diving camera is the Intova CP9.

The suggested retail price on this waterproof camera is $139.95, but you can get it for about half that price on Amazon. You won’t find any other waterproof digital camera that can go to 130 feet for anywhere near this price. But despite its cheap price tag, The CP9 has a lot of features. It can shoot 9 megapixel still images (which can be increased up to 12 MP resolution with hardware interpolation) and can record 640×480 VGA resolution video at 20 frames per second. It has a 4x digital zoom and comes with a variety of scene modes, including Portrait, Landscape, Backlight, Sports and Night, as well as Program AE. And you can capture all of your undersea adventures on the 32 MB of internal memory or on an optional SDHC card, which can be used to save up to 16 GB of data.

Intova doesn’t offer an optional off-camera strobe unit specifically for the CP9, but you can you pick up an inexpensive underwater dive light to illuminate your photos. For color correction, the Intova CP9 can also be fitted with an optional red filter.

This isn’t a camera that can compete with the photo quality of a DSLR in an underwater housing, but you’d pay at least $1200 or more for a setup like that. It’s also not going to compete with the rugged, shockproof construction and special shooting features of other waterproof cameras such as the Panasonic TS4 or Nikon AW100. However, those cameras are only good for snorkeling or shallow scuba diving, as the Panasonic is only waterproof to 40 feet and the Nikon is only waterproof to 33 feet. If you need an inexpensive digital camera that can go to the Open Water diving limit, you won’t find a better cheap scuba diving camera than the Intova CP9.
