Panasonic TS4 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DSC-TS4 is the next generation of the hugely popular DSC-TS3. Panasonic has kept the best features of the waterproof and shockproof TS3 and added more creative controls to the new model. This is a great camera for underwater and all-around use. Here’s why.

Panasonsic TS4 Features
The TS4 is built for outdoor adventures. It’s waterproof to 40 (12m) feet, shockproof to 6.6 feet (2m), freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 degrees C) and dustproof. That means you won’t need to worry about accidentally dropping this camera or having it freeze up while taking photos on the ski slopes. And it’s compact, so you can stick it in your pocket and take it just about anywhere.

Since it’s designed with sports and travel in mind, the Lumix TS4 comes equipped with GPS, compass, altimeter and a barometer to show and record altitude, barometric pressure and orientation data. You can even use the barometer as an indicator for depth underwater. The smart electronics in this camera also will automatically adjust the camera’s time to the local time wherever you are, so you won’t need to adjust it when you travel across country or go abroad.

Of course, a camera with a lot of fancy features and poor quality photos would be a bad investment, so Panasonic has made sure the TS4 lives up to consumer’s expectations. It has a 12.1 MP CCD sensor, a 28mm wide angle lens and a 4.6x optical zoom that can extend to 9.3x with enhanced resolution technology. That makes it easy to bring your subjects closer and still get exceptionally sharp images. See the sample images below. (Images copyright Panasonic)

panasonic ts4 review - digital zoom

The camera also makes it easy to capture action shots. It is equipped with Sonic Speed AF, which provides a quick startup time and focus time, and AF Tracking, a function that will continually track a subject until you press the shutter button. With AF Tracking, you won’t need to press the shutter button halfway repeatedly to readjust the focus of quick moving subjects like kids or pets.

Of course, you can also capture action on video with the Panasonic TS4. The camera can shoot full 1920 x 1080 HD video with one-touch ease, and you can take still photos while recording video. However, the photos will be recorded at 3.5 MP, regardless of whether you’ve set a higher resolution in the camera.

Shutterbugs who aren’t satisfied with just typical point-and-shoot photos will also enjoy some additional features offered by the TS4. The DMC-TS4 has added more manual controls than offered by its predecessor, the TS3. Users can now set their own shutter speed and aperture, a feature serious photographers will appreciate. You can also take 3D photos, shoot panorama images, or add a special miniature effect that defocuses the peripherals while emphasizing saturation and contrast to make the picture look like a diorama. There’s also a time lapse mode for shooting at intervals.

Who Should Buy the Panasonic TS4?
The TS4 is a great camera for anyone looking for an all-purpose camera that can stand up to the rigors of outdoor adventure. It’s equipped with high quality photo and video capabilities and extra features such as GPS that sports enthusiasts will enjoy. If you need a waterproof camera with all the extra features, the TS4 is definitely right for you. But if you simply want a high resolution waterproof camera that can take great photos, and you don’t need GPS and some of the other features in this camera, you might want to take a look at the cheaper Panasonic TS20 or the Olympus Stylus Tough 8010.

Nikon S30 Review

nikon s30 review intro imageThe Nikon Coolpix S30 is a 10.1 MP waterproof camera with 3x zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD and a host of options for creative fun. This camera S30 waterproof camera is geared toward budget-conscious shoppers and families who want a camera that everyone can use, even the youngest members of the clan.

The Coolpix S30 waterproof camera is from Nikon, a brand that has been trusted for generations when it comes to quality images. The Nikon Coolpix S30 is waterproof to 10 feet (3 meters) and is shockproof up to 2.6 feet as well, so you don’t need to worry too much about the kids dropping it. That makes it a great camera for playing around at the pool, the park, the playground, or anywhere you go.

How does the Nikon Coolpix S30 digital camera work?
You don’t need to be an expert photographer to take great photos on land or underwater with this camera. The Nikon S30 waterproof camera is designed for everyone to use. It has an easy-to-understand menu and large buttons that make it easy to shoot photos or videos or select the menu options you want. Nikon has also clearly separated the buttons so the ones on top are for turning the camera on or off and shooting images or video. The buttons on the back are for menu functions and other creative functions.

With the S30, you can record and edit home movies and vacation images in a snap. This waterproof camera also has amazing creative options that allow you to add a digital frame to your photos, highlight only one color in the image, turn points of light into starbursts and even add a voice message to a photo. You can also change the sounds associated with various camera functions to fun options such as a bird chirping or a dog barking. All of these features will obviously appeal to kids and folks with a sense of fun.

Many of the “fun” features included with this camera, such as adding digital borders, can easily be done with photo editing software, but for people who don’t like editing their photos, this is a quick alternative. One important thing to note when adding frames, however, is that the camera automatically changes the resolution to the lowest setting, which is 2 MP.

But the camera is a Nikon, after all, so users shouldn’t worry about the quality of the images when the highest resolution is selected. At 10 MP, the Nikon S30 does have lower resolution than some other waterproof cameras on the market, but 10 MP will still create great photos, even when printed up to small poster sizes. And it shoots full 720p HD video which you can review on the 2.7 inch monitor as soon as you record. Connectivity is also a snap with the Nikon Coolpix S30 waterproof camera; it can easily connect to high definition television, a computer monitor or a photo printer to print images as soon as you take them.

One drawback to image quality, however, can be the flash settings – the flash can only be set to auto or off. There is no manual way to turn it on. So occasionally you may find that the flash won’t fire in a low-light situation because the camera doesn’t think it’s quite dark enough to need the flash. This can result in dark, blurry photos unless you increase the natural light to improve the photo quality or decrease the existing light to trigger the flash.

Even with this limitation, however, the Nikon S30 is a great camera. For the price, you’re not going to find a better waterproof camera with HD video, especially one that can be used by both kids and adults.

Nikon S30 Pros:

  • Easy-to-use large buttons
  • Rugged enough to go almost anywhere
  • Underwater mode for good color
  • Many creative options and special effects
  • Priced right for families on a budget

Nikon S30 Cons:

  • Lower resolution and less rugged than some leading waterproof cameras
  • Uses AA batteries (but can be replaced with rechargeable)
  • Flash can’t be turned on manually

Recommendations
The Nikon S30 waterproof camera is easy to use, takes great photos and will appeal to both kids and adults. It’s available in three bright colors – blue, pink and white – and has more creative “fun” options than other rugged cameras. If you want a budget-priced camera that can shoot both photos and HD video on land or in water, this may be the camera for you. Before making a decision, check out the sample videos and more customer reviews below.

Sony TX200v Review

With the release of the 18.2 MP Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX200v, the camera manufacturer has jumped to the front of the pack of high-resolution point-and-shoot waterproof cameras. The latest Cyber-shot easily outpaces the resolution of the nearest competitor, the new Panasonic TS20 (which sports a 16.1 MP sensor), and can also claim the largest screen (3.3 inches) of any underwater camera. Add full-resolution continuous shooting at 10 frames per second to the equation and you can see why the Sony TX200v is going to be a popular camera with outdoor enthusiasts who want high resolution action shots.

Sony TX200v Features
The Sony TX200v is an ultra compact camera with a lot of features packed into its small body. It’s waterproof to 16 feet and dustproof for peace of mind when you’re outdoors. The 18.2 MP Exmor R CMOS sensor can capture crisp, sharp images and 1080p HD video with the Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens with a focal length (35mm equivalent) of 28-140mm and a 5x optical zoom.

What makes this camera particularly impressive, however, is not the ability to take one or two great quality shots, but the ability to shoot full 18.2 MP images in bursts of 10 frames per second. No other waterproof camera on the market comes close to this, not only because the Sony resolution is the highest in its class, but also because many cameras that offer 10fps continuous shooting do it at a lower resolution. (Note: If you’re buying this camera for its speedy high-resolution images, be sure to get a memory card that can handle the quick write time required. Look for a Class 10 micro SD card.)

Other impressive features of the Sony DSC-TX200v include a 3.3-inch OLED touch screen, high speed auto focus, ISO settings from 64 to 12800, and functions to help you get the best photos, such as Smile Shutter, Face Detection, Background Defocus, Anti-blink technology and motion detection. The TX200v also offers Natural Flash mode, which aims to improve the harsh lighting often seem in images shot with on-camera flash by adjusting the white balance for the subject and background.

GPS and Compass
And if you’re looking for a waterproof camera with GPS, you won’t be disappointed. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX200v has a built-in GPS and compass that will record location data as you shoot. Later, you can use the GPS information to track your journey and see your images in a path on Google Earth

Recommendations
The Sony DSC-TX200v is a great camera for anyone wanting a waterproof camera to take fast action shots at full resolution. The large screen, wide-angle lens and high ISO ratings will make it great for just about any type of shooting. The only drawback to this camera is really the price, as its MSRP is higher than any of the other waterproof digital cameras on the market. But as there’s no comparison in speed and resolution, that shouldn’t deter outdoor photographers who need a camera that can capture images as fast as they can shoot.

Sony TX200v PROS
- highest resolution sensor of any waterproof compact camera
- large OLED screen
- full resolution continuous shooting at 10 fps

Sony TX200v CONS
- highest-priced waterproof camera on the market
- not shockproof or freezeproof like many rugged cameras

What’s the Best Underwater Camera for You?

What’s the best underwater camera? In 2011, the bestselling and best-rated waterproof shockproof digital camera on Amazon was the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3. But is this the camera for you? Choosing the perfect waterproof camera for you really depends on your needs. Are you a snorkeler who wants to take great photos on your vacation to Hawaii? A sports enthusiast who wants a camera to go with you on any type of outdoor adventure? A scuba diver who needs a camera that can go to 200 feet? Or maybe someone looking for an inexpensive second camera? Here are some of the bestselling, most popular and best-rated waterproof cameras separated into categories of users to help you find the best camera for you.

Best Underwater Camera for All-Around Use

The new model of the most popular waterproof camera in 2011

best underwater camera 2012 - panasonic lumix ts4The best underwater camera for everyday use and one that could easily serve as your primary all-purpose camera and camcorder is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4. This is a new waterproof camera for 2012 from Panasonic. Its previous incarnation, the DMC-TS3, was the best-rated and bestselling waterproof camera on Amazon in 2011, and the new TS4 is even better. The reason consumers love this camera is because it’s rugged and can go wherever you go. It’s waterproof to 40 feet, shockproof for falls from up to 6.6 feet, dustproof and freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

This Panasonic Lumix isn’t just tough, however; it’s popular because it shoots great photos and video. It has a 12.1 MP Hi-Speed CCD sensor for high resolution still images and the ability to shoot 1920 x 1080 full HD video in either AVCHD or MP4 format. For creative control, the TS4 allows users to adjust the shutter speed and aperture and offers automatic time lapse images and panoramic stitching. And if you’re taking it on an adventure, the TS4 comes complete with GPS, a compass, altimeter and barometer.http://underwatercamerareviews.org/wp-admin/post-new.php

This is the best waterproof camera for anyone who only wants to own one camera that can go everywhere and do just about anything.

Best Underwater Camera for Hands-Free Shooting

best underwater cameras 2012 - gopro hero2 outdoor editionIf you want the best waterproof camera for hands-free shooting, there’s no better choice than the GoPro Hero2: Outdoor Edition. This is currently the most popular underwater hands-free camera on Amazon and it has a 4- out of 5-star average rating from more than 100 pleased customers. The GoPro series of cameras are designed for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who want to capture their adventures on film. You can strap this little camera to your helmet, surfboard, bike handlebars or just about anywhere else to capture 11 MP still photos or full (1080p) HD video. This camera measures only 3.9 x 3.9 x 9.6 inches and weighs a mere 1.7 pounds, so it’s easy a small companion to have along for your adventures.

The GoPro Hero2 is waterproof to 197 feet (60m) and capable of capturing 170-degree wide angle 1080p video and 11 megapixel photos at a rate of 10 photos per second. For hands-free shooting, the GoPro Hero2 is the best waterproof camera you can currently buy.

Best Budget Underwater Camera for Snorkeling

best underwater camera 2012 - fuji finepix xp30The Pansonic Lumix waterproof camera line offers some of the best underwater cameras available today, but you’ll pay a price to get these top-of-the-line cameras. A good alternative for snorkeling and other water sports is the Fuji FinePix XP30. Like the Lumix TS4, the FinePix is waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freezeproof, but not to the extremes of the Panasonic model. The FinePix is only waterproof to 16.5 feet (5 meters), but that still makes it a great camera for snorkeling.

It also features a 14-megapixel CCD sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, GPS tagging, panoramic mode and 720p HD video. At only 5.5 inches and 1.1 pounds, it’s also small enough to take just about anywhere or to slide into your luggage on your next vacation.

Best Underwater Camera For About $100

best underwater cameras under $100 -kodak sport c123As of this writing, the Kodak Sport C123 is one of the top 5 cameras in the underwater category on Amazon and is just a tad over $100 at $102.85 (Prices subject to change. See Amazon for the latest prices). You’ll pay about $125 right now for a different color, but that still makes the Sport C123 a good deal. And with a 3.5- out of 5-star rating from over 400 customers, this little camera has been tried and tested. The Sport C123 offers 12 MP resolution and a 2.6-inch LCD viewing screen. It’s only waterproof to 10 feet, but that’s plenty deep enough for most snorkeling and swimming, and it’s dustproof, too. This is not a camera you’d want as your primary photographic piece of equipment, but as a backup or an inexpensive way to capture photos underwater, the Kodak Sport C123 is the best waterproof camera about under $100.

Best Underwater Camera for Scuba Diving

Until recently, scuba divers basically had two options when taking photos underwater – get an expensive underwater housing for your SLR /DSLR, or use a waterproof compact camera that didn’t have the high resolution or creative controls offered by a DSLR. There’s still no underwater DSLR, but the SeaLife DC1400 is a good alternative at a great price.

best underwater cameras for scuba diving - sealife dc1400This is the best underwater camera for scuba divers who don’t want to spend thousands on a waterproof housing and strobes for their DSLR but want to capture great underwater photos. This camera can go to 200 feet underwater and allows users to set the ISO from 64 to 3200, select a shutter speed from 1 second to 1/2000 and manually adjust the white balance or choose from several settings. It comes with 6 underwater modes and 27 modes from shooting on dry land without the underwater housing.

The SeaLife DC1400 was introduced in late 2011 as the successor to the popular DC1200, which Sport Diver magazine selected as the Editor’s Pick for Underwater Cameras for New Photographers.

New Waterproof Lumix Camera Offers More Creative Control

new panasonic waterproof lumix camera DMC-TS4Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-TS3 has been one of the bestselling waterproof digital cameras on the market since it was released, but now Panasonic is taking their waterproof Lumix line to new levels by introducing the Lumix DMC-TS4.

The new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4 will give users more creative control than the earlier point-and-shoot Lumix cameras by allowing users to adjust the shutter speed and aperture. The TS4 also comes with new creative modes – Time Lapse Shot, Miniature Effect and Panorama Shot. With Time Lapse Shot, the user selects the start time, interval time and number of photos to shoot and the camera does the rest. The Miniature Effect mode emphasizes saturation and contrast while defocusing the peripheries of the image, making the photo look like a diorama. Videos recorded in Miniature Effect mode are played back in 10x fast forward, making the effect more comical. As the name suggest, Panorama Shot allows users to shoot a horizontal or vertical panoramic image by taking consecutive shots and overlaying the images to create a panoramic photo up to 360 degrees.

In addition, the latest waterproof Lumix camera from Panasonic comes with GPS, a compass, altimeter and barometer. The DMC-TS4 is bundled with a DVD that integrates the camera’s new GPS system with more than a million landmarks and 82 countries and regions. Users who geo tag their photos can automatically sort and play the images by location so they can literally trace their journey through photos.

These fancy features are in addition to many of the popular features found on earlier models of the waterproof Lumix camera series. Like its predecessor the DMC-TS3, the Lumix TS4 is rugged. The camera is waterproof to approximately 40 feet (12 meters), shockproof from falls up to 6.6 feet (2 meters), freezeproof to temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and dustproof. It has a Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR lens with a 4.6x optical zoom (equivalent to a 28-128mm 35mm lens), a 12.1 MP Hi-Speed CCD sensor, and the ability to shoot full-HD (1920 x 1080) video in both and MP4 formats.

The Panasonic LUMIX TS4 is available in orange, blue, black and silver options with a suggested retail price of $399.99.

SeaLife DC1400 Review

sealife dc1400 reviewOne of the most amazing underwater digital cameras to date is the SeaLife DC1400. It is a 14 MP high definition camera that can shoot videos and stunning clear still images up to a depth of 200 feet. If you’re serious about underwater photography but can’t spend thousands on an underwater housing and strobes for your DSLR, the Sealife DC1400 may be the camera you’re looking for.

What is a SeaLife DC1400?
The DC1400 from SeaLife is an underwater camera designed to be used for deep water photography. It has built –in features such as large “piano key” controls and 6 underwater modes that make it easy to capture great shots all the time.

How does the SeaLife DC1400 work?

It may not be an underwater DSLR, but the SeaLife DC 1400 will give you many features you want in a camera for less cost than you’d pay to buy a waterproof housing and strobes to bring your DSLR diving.

The buttons and levers on this camera are built to make it easy to take photos while diving. Scuba Diving magazine said, “We’ve used the DC1400′s predecessor, the DC1200, and the keys are easy to push even with bulky drysuit gloves.” Huge buttons allow easy one-step recording and photo shooting. The SeaLife’s Easy Set Up mode has an on screen guide that helps you set your camera to expertly shoot pictures even when you are a novice hobbyist. Choose from 6 Underwater Modes that are set for different underwater conditions. The SeaLife DC 1400 also has built-in digital color correction filters, and optional accessories like strobes to make sure you get the best looking photos. It also has a Spy Mode that will allow you to shoot pictures at preset automatic intervals without using your hands.

What are the benefits of using a SeaLife DC1400?
If underwater photography is your hobby or business, this camera won’t let you down. Chosen by more and more experts in this field, here are some of the reasons why this model is by far the best one of its type in this price range:

“I just completed a dry suit dive in the Columbia River at a balmy 37 degrees Fahrenheit and had no issues. The camera took wonderful pictures, stayed totally dry in the housing, and the buttons were easy to use, even with heavy gloves in COLD water.”

What is a Nikon AW100 waterproof camera?
The Nikon AW100 waterproof camera is Nikon’s first underwater digital camera. For years, Nikon dominated the underwater market with its legendary Nikonos film cameras. The Nikon Coolpix AW100 waterproof camera is Nikon’s first foray back into the underwater market. This little camera will take perfect pictures all the time with its 16 MP CMOS sensor. This is ideal when you do not have enough light while you shoot videos or take pictures.

This is a great camera when you are looking for a waterproof, shock-proof device and a camera which will survive extremes of temperature to as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Features such as full HD video capabilities also make it a perfect digital video recorder to take along anywhere.

Try the black and white mode, selective color mode and more to get the flawless shot you have dreamed of. Unsteady hands? Struggling with underwater shots? You can capture creative moments under water with the Nikon AW100’s VR image stabilizing feature. Keeping track of objects in motion is also Nikon’s specialty and this is done with the model’s automotive motion detector that can automatically make adjustments on your settings.

Preview: New Waterproof Cameras 2012

If you’re looking for new waterproof cameras, 2012 is going to be a good year. Since the first digital underwater camera hit the market in 2005, manufacturers have been slowly adding to their waterproof lineup, and this year brings more releases. The underwater cameras shown here are either available for purchase now, for pre-order, or will be released very soon. If you’re looking for a new waterproof camera, here’s a sneak preview at the new underwater cameras coming out in 2012:

new waterproof cameras 2012 - canon powershot d20Canon PowerShot D20
Canon will be releasing the PowerShot D20 in the spring, the first waterproof camera they’ve introduced since the PowerShot D10. The new model will maintain the 12.1 megapixel resolution but has new styling and features such as GPS. Like the D10, the D20 will be waterproof to 33 feet and able to withstand temperatures from 14 – 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It has a 5x optical zoom with 28mm wide angle lens and 3.0-inch Pure Color System LCD for easy viewing.

new waterproof digital cameras 2012 - nikon coolpix s30Nikon CoolPix S30
Nikon is also releasing a new camera, the CoolPix S30. This model is priced just over $100, which is much lower than Nikon’s AW100 underwater camera, and it comes with fewer features. But the new CoolPix is a great entry level model. It is waterproof to 9.8 feet (3 meters) and shockproof from falls up to 2.6 feet, and the camera company was wise enough to still include HD video. Nikon’s latest underwater camera comes in three bright colors (blue, white and pink).

new waterproof cameras 2012 - lumix t4Panasonic Lumix TS4
Panasonic is building on the popularity of the underwater Lumix DMC-T3 and releasing the Lumix DC-T4. It’s going to maintain many of the features that made the Lumix cameras bestsellers, such as HD video, fast response times, and a variety of shooting modes. Like the earlier Lumix, the TS4 will also come in a variety of colors – black, blue, orange and silver. it will feature a built-in GPS system, compass, altimeter and barometer, plus rugged features such as being waterproof to approximately 40 feet (12 meters), shockproof to approximately 6.6 feet (2 meters), freeze proof to temperatures as low as 14ºF, and dustproof. This is a great all-around camera for everyday use and it is sure to be another bestseller for Panasonic.

new waterproof cameras 2012 - panasonic dmc-ts20
Panasonic DMC-TS20

The new Panasonic DMC-TS20 is the inexpensive alternative to the TS4. This 16.1 megapixel camera doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of its feature-packed cousin, but it’s still rugged. Its waterproof to 5 meters, freezeproof to -10 degrees C, shockproof to 1.5 meters and dustproof. It features 720p HD video recording and a 4x optical zoom with 8x equivalent with the Intelligent zoom function and users can preview their shots on a 2.7-inch Intelligent LCD screen. The new TS20 also includes a variety of special modes, including the Miniature Effect and Panorama Shot modes that are also featured on the TS4. With Panasonic’s winning track record with waterproof cameras, this will be a welcome addition to the marketplace at a price that consumers will like.

new waterproof cameras 2012 - sony cybershot dsc-tx200v 2012Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX200V
The dustproof, waterproof Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX200V will capture 18.2MP ultra-high definition images even in low-light and full HD video with dual record of stills and movies. With hi-speed autofocus, the ability to capture 10fps, and Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode for blur-free movies, your images will look great. And you’ll be able to preview everything in the 3.3-inch OLED.

Amazon ImageSony Cyber-Shot DCS-TX20

Sony is replacing its TX10 this year with the new Sony TX20. This 16.2MP waterproof, shockproof, dustproof camera shoots still pictures and Full HD 1080/60i videos with its stabilized 4X optical/8X Clear Image zoom lens. The new Dual Record feature even lets you capture still photos while shooting video. The TX20 also features Sony’s 3D photo mode and 3D iSweep Panorama, a feature that allows you to press the shutter once, pan the landscape, and let the camera do the rest. If you’re shooting action, this little camera is a winner with the ability to capture 10 frames per second. Sony will be releasing this model in May.

new underwater cameras 2012 - xp150Fujifilm FinePix XP100 and XP150

Fujifilm is adding three new cameras to its waterproof XP series this year. All of them will feature a 14-MegaPixel CMOS sensor, up to 10 frames per second continuous shooting, a 2.7-inch anti-reflective LCD for improved viewing in sunlight, and a FUJINON 5x wide angle optical zoom lenses (28-140mm). They’ll also be able to shoot HD video at 30fps.

The XP100 and the XP150 will also share the same standards in four-way protection: they’re both waterproof to 33ft (10M), shockproof to 6.5 ft, freezeproof to 14°F (-10°C) and dustproof. The XP150, however, will also offer additional features not found in the other two new models – GPS, an electronic compass, Photo Navigation and GPS Geo-Tagging.

new waterproof cameras 2012 - Fuji FinePix XP50Fuji FinePix XP50

The XP50 is the cheaper sibling of the XP100 and XP150, but it still sports many of the same features, including the 14-MP CMOS sensor, 10 fps continuous shooting, 2.7-inch LCD, and the FUJINON 5x wide angle optical zoom lenses. Like its more expensive counterparts, it also shoots HD video. The main difference between this camera and the other new XP models is in its specs for rugged durability. It’s not quite as tough as its siblings, but it still makes a respectable showing. It’s waterproof to 16.5 feet, shockproof to 5 feet, freezeproof to 14 degrees and dustproof. It also doesn’t have the GPS and navigation features of the XP150.

Where to Buy a Used Underwater Camera

used underwater cameraDo you want to buy a used underwater cameras? The web is a great place to look for used products, and many people may automatically turn to eBay or Craiglist to find a used waterproof camera. Both are great places to search and find bargains, and you should always check these sources when you’re looking for a great deal. But they have downsides, too. On eBay, everyone is looking for a bargain and you may be forced to bid against many other people who can outbid you at the last minute, and Craiglist users don’t have ratings you can evaluate. The ads are also limited by your geographic region, so you might not find a big selection.

If eBay and Craiglist don’t work out, where else can you buy a used underwater camera? The answer is Amazon. Yes, Amazon. The megastore is a great choice because, like eBay, they allow merchants from all around the country to post items for sale and provide seller ratings you can review before making a purchase. But unlike eBay, you’ll never have to wait for an auction to end or worry about getting outbid at the last moment. Some products are even offered by Amazon itself, through the Amazon Warehouse, so you can get free shipping and the assurances that come from shopping with a trusted retailer.

I recently purchased a used waterproof camera for $93.07, including free Prime shipping, from the Amazon Warehouse. A new model of the same camera was selling for $179 on Amazon. Of course, my used model showed some signs of wear and tear, but it worked perfectly, and that’s what mattered most to me.

How can you get bargains like this? It’s easy to find used underwater cameras for sale on Amazon. Simply go to the underwater camera category and scroll down the left column until you see the section called Condition. Click the link that says “Used.” That will limit the results so the only listings you’ll see are ones with a used model available. Be sure to look at all the listings carefully, as the condition, color and shipping charges can make a big difference in price. The camera I bought was green and listed in “good condition.” The cheapest used model in blue and also in good condition was $119. I chose price over color and got the best deal.

Many of the waterproof cameras will have more than one used model available. Click the “…used from…” link under the camera photo to see a list of all the used options. You’ll get a chart showing all the options available, including each camera’s condition, the seller ratings, shipping information and other data, as shown in the example below.

used underwater camera screenshot

Don’t forget to look at the shipping details to make sure you’re not choosing the cheapest camera, only to have to pay the most in shipping. If you find one of the used underwater cameras from the Amazon Warehouse, you may be able to get free Prime shipping or free Super Saver shipping.

With a few minutes of research and a little luck, you’ll walk away with a great used waterproof camera at an even better price!

5 Affordable Digital Cameras for Diving

In the past, underwater photography was quite an expensive hobby. You either had to invest in an underwater camera like the Nikonos or buy a waterproof housing for your existing camera. Either option was pricey. But times have changed. While underwater housings for top-of-the line DSLRs can still set you back over $1000 for the case alone, not to mention the strobe lights you’ll need to get good underwater photos, there are much cheaper alternatives on the market for those who are just exploring underwater photography for the first time and can’t afford to invest thousands of dollars in equipment. Here are five affordable digital cameras for diving. All of these underwater cameras, along with the necessary underwater lights, can be purchased for under $1000.

That’s why the basic camera comes in three editions: Outdoor Edition, Motorsports Edition and Surf Edition. Each edition comes with a different set of mounts and straps. Its rugged design and depth rating make it great for scuba divers. With a waterproof depth rating of 197 feet and a full 170º wide angle field of view, the GoPro Hero2 is well-suited for either Open Water or technical diving. SeaLife DC1400 Pro

Digital camera for diving to 200 feet

If you’re looking for high-quality underwater cameras made for scuba divers, SeaLife manufactures some of the most popular cameras on the market. Last year, Sport Diver magazine chose the SeaLife DC1200 Elite as their Editor’s Pick for “Underwater Cameras for New Photographers.” The SeaLife DC1400 Pro, the successor to the DC1200, builds on an already great product. The new model can capture beautiful still images and HD video with a 14 megapixel CCD, 6 underwater modes and 4 built-in digital color correction filters. Most importantly, the camera can be paired with one or one two off-the-camera strobes for great underwater color. The SeaLife DC1400 was designed with deep diving in mind – it has 5 “piano key” controls that make it easy to operate, even with wetsuit gloves on. It also has a “spy mode” that will automatically shoot photos at set intervals. If you want creative control and high quality images, but can’t afford a DSLR with an underwater housing, this is a great digital camera for diving.

Hands-free camera mask also takes video to 130 Feet

An innovative option for hands-free underwater photography is the Liquid Image Wide Angle Scuba Series mask. This new addition to Liquid Image’s line of camera masks has a 136-degree wide-angle lens that offers a greater field of vision than the previous models and allows you to capture 720p HD video or 5 MP still images down to 130 feet. An LED inside the mask indicates whether you are in still image or video mode, and lever-style buttons make it easy to use while wearing gloves. It’s available in two sizes. The mask doesn’t come with filters or a flash, but you can purchase these separately. Liquid Image makes both a 4.7-watt and 5.5-watt light that can attach to the camera mask, so you won’t need to carry it in your hands. For hands-free underwater photography, the Liquid Image scuba mask is a good choice.

Intova CP9 Digital Camera for Diving

An inexpensive scuba diving camera to 130 feet

If you’re really on a budget, the Intova CP9 for diving may be the model for you. The MSRP on this underwater camera is $139.95, which is a pretty low price for an underwater camera anyway, but you can get it for about half that price on Amazon. The CP9 can shoot 9 MP still photos and VGA resolution (640 x 480) video down to 130 feet. It comes with a number of scene modes, including Sports, Night, Portrait, Landscape, and Backlight, plus Program AE. You can choose between three quality options for stills (fine, standard, and economy) and two options for video (fine and standard). The one thing it’s lacking is a light source, but with the money you’ll be saving on the camera itself, you should be able to get a decent handheld light source to illuminate your photos.

Panasonic DMC-TS3

A waterproof camera for shallow diving to 40 feet

This waterproof Lumix camera from Panasonic isn’t particularly suited for scuba diving except in shallow waters, as it’s only waterproof to 40 feet. But if you want a top-rated camera for everyday use that is also waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freezeproof, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 is all of those things. It’s been the most popular camera in Amazon’s underwater camera department for months. In addition to offering a 12.1 MP Hi-Speed CCD Sensor and 1920x1080p HD video in AVCHD and MP4 format, the DMC-TS3 has fun features like GPS and 3D photo mode. If you only want one camera that can go just about anywhere and do just about anything, this is a good choice. And if you really like it, both Panasonic and Ikelite make underwater housings that will allow you to take this camera to deeper depths.

Any of these waterproof cameras can get you started in underwater photography for less than $1000.

Underwater Cameras Under $100

If you’re looking for a top-of-the-line waterproof camera, you’re probably looking at spending anywhere from $300-$400 for a popular camera like the new waterproof Lumix camera from Panasonic to over $1000 for a camera designed for deep diving, such as the SeaLife 1400DC. But if you’re on a budget, it is possible to get an underwater camera under $100. All of the cameras below are currently available on Amazon for less than $100, although a few of them have suggested retail prices much higher than that and you could easily pay more than $100 for these cameras at some retail stores. None of them will produce the quality of underwater photos you see in National Geographic, but all of them will help you have some fun at the beach, the pool or the lake without breaking the bank.  Here’s a quick comparison to help you determine if any of these cameras is right for you.

Digital Photography Tips
digital photography tips

After buying a great camera, there is this misconception that taking excellent photos will be easy and that they will come out looking perfect. However, for you to take perfect photos, it is important you understand and follow several digital photography tips.

First, it is important to understand your camera’s settings. A good photographer knows how and when to use which setting. You need to consider several factors like the weather, environment, subject/object, time of day etc. Many cameras come already pre-installed with all these settings, and it is a matter of adjusting them.

Memory capacity is also an important aspect that should be considered. Great photos take substantial amount of memory space. If your camera’s storage is small, you will be forced to set it to lower compression setting meaning that you will not be able to take high-resolution photos. Therefore, it is prudent to invest in a larger memory card.

Battery power is another factor that can determine the quality of photos you can take, especially if you will take many in count. On average, the batteries should last anything between one to four hours depending on the model and usage. If you will be taking few pictures after longer intervals, it is wise to switch it off to conserve the battery power. Another useful tip is to disable the flash when taking pictures in broad daylight, sound effects, avoid using the LCD viewfinder and other optional features.

The camera flash is a great tool if used properly. If you are a beginner, one of the most important lessons is to understand that there are limitations to this feature. For example, if the subject is very far away, the in-built flash will have little or no effect at all. Therefore, it is only useful when the subject is just a few feet away from the camera.

These are just but a few digital photography tips that need may help both beginners and professionals take excellent photos.

Best Buy Underwater Camera

Underwater photography is fun and exciting and can open up a brand new world of options for any photographer, amateur or professional. If you’re thinking of buying a Best Buy underwater camera, learn all of your purchasing options and whom underwater cameras are best suited for.

So who should buy an underwater camera?

Boating Enthusiasts

If you and your family often take out the boat to bask in the sun, party, vacation or fish, an underwater camera easily replaces the camera you’re using now. Plus, it’s completely waterproof and offers the durability you need should the rocking boat cause it to slip from your grasp and hit the deck.  With an underwater camera, you can jump over the side and capture the beautiful wildlife around you or your children swimming below.

Fisherman

Whether you’re an avid angler or just starting out, an underwater camera is a great tag-along buddy to capture those great catches (or not-so-great catches) and show them off to your friends. An underwater camera is waterproof, durable and can be used above or below the water.

Avid Vacationers

If you and your family often take trips to the beach, the lake, snorkeling or diving, an underwater camera is a must-have. They’re light-weight, versatile and durable and you won’t have to worry about switching cameras when you move from surf to sand.

Take fun family photos out of the water and capture those amazing moments beneath the waves. Imagine capturing your child’s first encounter with a manta ray or your spouse’s first foray into a coral reef.  Most underwater cameras also come with a video feature so you can capture those vacation memories in “reel-time” and relive them again and again.  The video feature is often in HD for dramatic, true-life video and comes with a white balance for crisp clarity every time.

Photographers

Photography is a beautiful and expressive art. Nothing makes enriching your portfolio easier than an underwater camera. With an underwater camera, the possibilities are nearly endless.  Capture a turtle swimming in a lake, a coral reef during a deep-sea dive, the underside of a waterfall or your first swim with a dolphin.  The fast shutter speed of 1/800th per second is just what you need to photograph amazing images in just about any water depth and light.

Other Advantages of an Underwater Camera

Unlike putting your above-water camera in a waterproof case, an underwater camera is built for the wide-angle lens photography you’ll need beneath the waves. It’s also budget-friendly because there’s no need to buy a separate camera for dry-land situations. An underwater camera is also a durable and reliable piece of equipment to have on hand.

Where Should I Buy an Underwater Camera?

Whether choosing a simple, point-and-shoot underwater camera to get you started or purchasing a top-of-the-line model with all the bells and whistles, you want to get the most bang for your buck.

If you’re thinking of buying a Best Buy underwater camera, you may be paying too much. When you buy an underwater camera from Amazon.com, you’ll be able to look over dozens, if not hundreds of unbiased reviews from real customers and make your selection at a cheaper price. Decide the camera you bought just isn’t for you? Amazon.com offers a money-back guarantee with no questions asked!

Walmart Underwater Camera

It’s that time of year again. Time to pack up the family and head out for a family vacation. If your vacations are usually on the beach or around water, you may have been considering purchasing a WalMart underwater camera. Learn the advantages of taking an underwater camera on your next vacation and all your purchasing options.

Durable

When you’re going on vacation, you want durability. Whether you’re driving, flying or training it to your vacation destination, your camera is likely going to get jostled, dropped and whacked all over the place before it gets there.

With an underwater camera, you get the durability you need should your camera slip on the boat or hit the rocks on the beach.

Versatile

Another advantage to having an underwater camera on your next vacation is its versatility. Imagine not having to switch cameras every time you want to switch from surf to sand.  You can capture fun family portraits on the boat and dive down deep with the same camera to take photos of the wildlife below.

Light-Weight and Compact

With the staggering cost of luggage these days, it’s important to pack light to keep your vacation easy on the budget. A lightweight underwater camera is perfect to slip into a carry-on or even a pocket so you can take it virtually anywhere!

Capture Video

Another great advantage of having an underwater camera is not only can you capture beautiful underwater scenes, you can take home fun real-time memories in high definition to relive again and again. Post them on YouTube or Facebook and share them with your family and friends.  If a picture of a colorful school or fish zigzagging through a coral reef is worth a thousand words, how much is the video worth?

Budget-Friendly

Since you won’t have to take more than one camera on the road with you, taking an underwater camera on your next vacation is budget-friendly, too. Not only will you save on luggage costs, there’s no need to purchase several different cameras for dry-land photography. An underwater camera does everything a standard camera does and more!

Other Advantages of an Underwater Camera

Though they do make underwater cases for regular cameras, the photos you take with them will be of poor quality. The low light of underwater photography demands the fast shutter speed and wide angle lens of a camera designed to take photos underwater to bring your images to life.

Where Should You Buy One?

An underwater camera purchase is a big decision. Whether you’re looking for a simple point-and-shoot piece for candid shots or a model with all the bells and whistles, it’s important to take the time to do look over our underwater camera reviews and do other research on blogs that you respect before you buy.

If you’re thinking of buying a WalMart waterproof camera, look into your options at other large online retailers first. There you’ll be able to read unbiased customer reviews and select from a wide variety of models at a less expensive price.  Even if you were able to get a Walmart kodak waterproof camera at a cheaper price you simply don’t have the luxury of reading real customers reviews which is such a valuable action to take before you buy.

Having second thoughts about your purchase? Amazon.com offers a money-back guarantee so you really have nothing to lose should you find the camera that you desire plus they are priced cheaper than any Walmart underwater camera that you would buy.

Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera I just added a new article on using a waterproof digital camera and it is definitely worth a read.

Unlike land photography you have to be more mindful with lighting underwater.  Underwater colors will dissipate with depth due to light refraction.  Often times underwater you will notice that colors begin to turn gray as you go deeper underwater.  Many colors will lose their vibrancy, while others can be more distinct.  Red tend to appear better when snapping digital underwater photos.  In tropical locations yellows, reds, and greens can be eye catching because reefs are shallow allowing more light to reach the reefs and fish.

How to Pick a Digital Camera

If you want to know how to pick a digital camera, it is important that you know a few things about them. Many people simply wander into the nearest camera shop and pick out the camera that catches their eye, but you will find that knowing a bit about digital cameras will help you make an educated choice and help you to choose the right one for you.

Here are a few features to look for when searching for a digital camera:

  • Megapixels

The average camera has between 10 MP and 14 MP, and you shouldn’t even consider a camera with lower than 10 MP. The megapixels of a camera determine that quality of the images taken, and you will want a camera with higher megapixels to ensure that the images you take are the best quality.

  • Zoom

The zoom of a camera allows you to zoom in and out for close up and panorama images. The average digital camera that you will find today has between 6x and 8x zoom, though the better cameras can have up to 10x zoom. Finding a camera that has 8x zoom will ensure that you are easily able to zoom in and out to take quality pictures.

  • Brand

There are dozens of camera makers producing cameras that can be found in local department and camera stores. The best brands to look for are Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, and Nikon. While these cameras tend to be more expensive, they have many more advanced features that make them the best digital cameras available on the market.  Olympus continues to amaze us with the quality of cameras that emerge like the Olympus Stylus 550.

  • Flash

The flash of your camera is very important, and each camera has a different flash range. While you may not be able to compare all of the cameras in the store to find the one with the best flash range, you can easily ask the store clerk which cameras are the best in this area.

  • Screen and Viewfinder

Nearly every camera in existence today has a viewfinder into which you squint to see your pictures, and the cameras that don’t have viewfinders have large LCD screens to show you your desired image. Most cameras have both, but it is often easier for beginners to snap pictures looking at the LCD screen. Many cameras come with a large LCD screen, and it makes it easier for you to take pictures when you have a larger screen.

  • Auto Settings

Every digital camera comes with an auto setting that allows you to take any kind of picture without having to adjust the camera. This makes it easier to snap pictures, but the auto settings on each camera tend to vary. Ask the sales clerk which camera has the best auto settings, as most amateur shutterbugs won’t know how to properly use and adjust the more advanced settings on their digital camera.

Using the above tips, you now know how to pick a digital camera that will be the best camera for you, and your new digital camera will take the best quality pictures according to what you can afford.
