What to Zoom In On When Buying a Waterproof Digital Camera

I was shopping for a camera my friend could use for her pool parties and trips.  She loves the color apple green.   The color of the camera case really shouldn’t be the decision point when buying a camera, but if you are shopping for a gift, it’s nice to be able to choose something in a color the recipient will love.  I’ve researched important features (besides the color of the case) to focus on when making a final selection on a waterproof camera.

I took a trip over to the local camera shop to let the experts fill me in on what to look for in waterproof cameras – besides the color apple green. I’m going to explain how these stack up in this Fujifilm FinePix Review.  The specific model I ended up selecting is the Fuji Finepix 733WP (WP for waterproof).  Besides color, here are the features I decided where important to evaluate, in order of priority.

Fujifilm FinePix Review -How Does it Handle on Land and Under Water?

My friend is not a camera buff, so this camera had to be easy to use and sturdy enough to survive being dropped to the floor or knocked against hard objects.  If the camera required a lot of manual settings and focusing, my friend would not use it.  I wanted a camera that was pretty intuitive.  Something anyone could use to take great pictures without thinking or fidgeting with the camera settings. The camera had to be easy to use on land and under water too. If you’ve ever spent money on a disposable underwater camera, you know that the experience is disappointing. The picture quality is poor and disposable cameras only allow 24 pictures and no video.

The saleslady introduced me to the Fuji Finepix which is waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freezeproof.  She had me take various pictures using the Fuji Finepix.   I took some close ups and zoomed in on some long distant shots of birds outside of the store.  It was easy enough to upload the pictures to a PC and view them on the store computer.  The camera is really slim and small, yet it fits well in the hand. To me, the pictures looked great, but I was curious how we were going to test the waterproof feature of the Fuji Finepix.

The saleslady read my mind, of course, and walked me over to a side room where there was a 25 gallon freshwater aquarium tank.  The aquarium had some goldfish and some kind of a turtle in it.  She handed me the camera, suggested I roll up my sleeves and give the camera a try under water in the tank. So I did.

Fujifilm FinePix Review -Video Quality

It was easy to use the Fuji Finepix under water.  After some basic guidance, the button controls were easy to locate and press.  If you are accustomed to looking through a video finder, it takes a bit to get to get used to using the LCD viewer.  I clicked some still shots and then went for a video recording.

When I pulled the camera out of the tank I didn’t see any leakage or signs of humidity in the 2.7 inch LCD.  Once again, we uploaded the pictures and viewed them on the PC.  I was really impressed with the quality of the video under water.  There was Mr. Turtle ‘smiling’ for the camera.  You could even hear the underwater noises captured by the audio during filming.  I was totally ‘WOWed!’

The camera is rated for safe operation under water down to 10 feet.  It doesn’t sound like much, but if you are looking for a diving camera, then you shouldn’t by this camera.  I wanted a hardy camera that was lightweight and easy to use outdoors, in the pool, or at the beach-not for ocean diving.

Fujifilm FinePix Review – Picture Quality

We compared the 10 megapixel pictures I took with the Fujifilm Finepix waterproof camera to similar shots I took with a couple of other waterproof cameras, a Nikon and a Canon. The picture quality was comparable to those more expensive cameras.  The Fujifilm Finepix has 3x optical zoom lens, not the most powerful, but sufficient for pool and beach shots.  It also has automatic face recognition for autofocus and automatic red eye removal – yes!

Fujifilm FinePix Review – Storage Capacity

If you don’t want to change memory cards while snorkeling or swimming you should opt for a larger memory card for the Fujifim Finepix.  Memory cards are cheap and you can get Kingston 4 GB Class 4 SDHC Flash Memory Card for under $7.  Well worth it to save you shots you may miss while swapping out memory cards.

Fujifilm FinePix Review – Battery Life

The battery is a LI-on rechargeable and good for up to 200 shots.

How Much Should You Expect to Pay?

You can always purchase the Fujifilm Finepix camera at a local shop, but you will pay less for buy purchasing it through Amazon.  I ended up buying it at the camera shop because I was all excited about finding a great waterproof camera in apple green.  I knew I would pay less for the camera on Amazon, but I was in the shop, had the camera in my hand…you know how it goes.  The total before taxes was $249.  I also picked up the Fujifilm Neoprene Weatherproof Sport Case and a floating strap for an additional $25.  I would recommend checking Amazon. Last I looked, I could have purchased the Fujifilm Finepix waterproof camera for $60 less than what I paid.  Oh, free shipping too.

Fujifilm FinePix Review – What’s Included in the Box?

The camera colors are apple green, ocean blue, black, and hot apple green.  The Fujifilm Finepix is boxed with:

  • Fuji Finepix z33wp camera
  • Rechargeable Li-Ion battery (NP-45)
  • USB and AV cables
  • Strap
  • Software

Fujifilm FinePix Review – Warranty

There is a 1 year manufacturer’s warranty that comes with the Fuji Finepix z33WP.  I wasn’t all charged up about the paper manual, but you can find the detailed information on the CD software that came with the camera.

Fujifilm FinePix Review – What Others are Saying?

My friend loved the camera!  She loves the color and thinks it’s fun, too.  At the camera store, the saleslady warned me several times that the biggest problem people have with the camera is when they fail to lock battery or memory card slots.  She wanted me to make sure I instructed my friend on this factor.  All you need to do is slide the slot door shut until you hear a faint click. If you don’t do this then there is a real possibility that water will get inside the camera and cause damage.

Other people think pretty highly of the Fujifilm Finepix waterproof digital camera, too.  Here are just a few comments that I found on online and at the Fujifilm website.

“It’s so easy to operate under water and takes great movies and pics. Seals are watertight and body is very sturdy. Good battery life considering how much I used it every day of my trip.”

“I am very impressed with this camera…the buttons are easy to use under water and it is lightweight and easy to transport.”

“We used the camera for hours at a time, snapping many pictures. Our images were good quality and had no problems with battery life or water leaking.”

“The tiny size and lightweightness[sic] of the Fuji Z33 WP are perfect for pocket portability. Its shape also has a much higher coolness factor than many of the standard boxy designs.”

Any Complaints?

I did find some complaints out there, but I think a lot of people were comparing apples to oranges.   Here’s someone else who felt the same way…

“Also, a few people mentioned the shutter delay. There is a fraction of a second delay, but I find that unless you get a SLR you will probably experience delay in most handheld digital point and shoots. The delay is comparable to other cameras of similar type, and in general, I would say somewhat better if not on the same level with most other point and shoots.”

Where Can You Buy the Fuji Finepix?

Of course, you can find the Fujifilm Finepix waterproof digital camera in most camera stores, but you always pay more than you will at Amazon.  I think it’s because Amazon can buy truckloads of cameras and get a great deal.  The local shops also have a lot more overhead.  Anyhow, I recommend you check out the best current deal running for the Fujifilm Finepix on Amazon. Right now they are running around $189 and have FREE shipping.

Where Can You Read More Fuji Finepix Review(s)?

There are hundreds of Fujifilm FinePix Review(s) you can read out at Amazon.
