Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 Waterproof Digital Camera
I’m a photographer at heart, so when I was able to plan a vacation to Brisbane this past summer, I knew I’d need a decent camera on my hip when we visited the Great Barrier Reef.
I shopped around a bit to consider what cameras were available in my price range, but the camera I ultimately decided upon was the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera. I chose the silver coloring because the brushed metal effect gives the camera the tough, rugged look it deserves.

Features to Consider in an Underwater Camera
Most people who shop for waterproof cameras are shopping in the hopes of having a camera that won’t die if it happens to come into contact with the wet stuff. This is fine for most families, since accidents happen with kids. However, there a few key differences between cameras that are designed to be waterproof and those that are designed to be used underwater, including:
- Saltwater Performance
- Stabilizing Technology
- Picture Quality
- Ease of Maintenance
Picture Perfect Underwater
Since the whole idea of having a camera that is usable underwater revolves around taking stunning pictures of coral and undersea life, it stands to reason that you will want a decent quality camera that is capable of capturing all the vibrant colors exactly as you see them. For this purpose, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 performs beautifully with its 14.1 mega-pixel lens. The real beauty of this thing is not just the fact that it can take such high resolution images, but how these images are processed using a function known as Intelligent Resolution.
Taking crystal clear photographs underwater presents something of a challenge, since light refracts and bounces on underwater objects, often confusing image processing software. however, the Venus Engine HD II included in the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 can create detailed textures by analyzing the edges and textures of what it sees. Optimal signal processing occurs instead of standard processing, leading to brighter, clearer photos, even when fully submerged.
The image quality is much improved over the previous model thanks to a new processing technology called Intelligent Resolution*1 that has been incorporated in the Venus Engine HD II for the Panasonic DMC-TS2. By detecting the signals at the edge of the subject to be photographed, they analyze detailed textures and then appropriately enhance the edges and textured areas respectively. Instead of uniformly enhancing the sharpness of the image, the new Intelligent Resolution finely tunes optimum signal processing, which gives the whole image an exquisite natural sharpness with superb details. As a result, pictures are naturally crisp and clear in photos as well as movie recording.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 Review- It Takes A Beating…
One of the greatest things about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is the design. Typically, waterproof cameras are designed so that the seals are in place to keep all the internal parts from getting exposed to water and after regular use, these seals may become warped. I used thePanasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 for several days while we snorkeled and enjoyed the beaches of Australia, all without incident. The seals are still perfectly intact and really show no signs of wear.
Of course, proper care and maintenance with a waterproof camera must be considered so as to extend the life of your investment. For starters, before we headed out each day, I would load the camera with full batteries and an 8GB MicroSD card, which was the biggest card available at the time. That way, I would not need to open up either hatch while on the beach and risk getting water or sand in the seals to destroy their integrity.
Afterward, when we got back to the hotel, I would dunk the camera in a bath of water to wash away any sand and then dry it thoroughly using a terry cloth. I didn’t open the camera until the next day when we were ready to head out again, just to be sure all the water was gone. This has certainly helped me extend the life of the camera and will definitely help extend the life of any underwater digital cameras, not just the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2.
Aside from being waterproof, the other major benefits of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 are that it is shock-proof, dust-proof, and freeze-proof. I imagine Panasonic got quite a few complaints on its DMC-TS1 model, as it was one of the cameras I researched before purchasing the Panasonic DMC-TS2 and it was purely a waterproof camera, without the additional benefits of shock and freeze-proofing. The waterproof DMC-TS2 is shock absorbent to a point of 6.6 feet, which is pretty decent, all things considered. The freeze-proofing (up to 14 degrees Fahrenheit) is a nice touch as well and makes this a great camera for skiers.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 Review -What’s In The Box?
The waterproof DMC-TS2 comes with a wrist strap attached, but I replaced the one included with a better strap that allowed the camera to float in the water. This replacement only cost me ten dollars, so it was not a bad investment. To use your DMC-TS2, you’ll need 1 Lithium ion battery. Unfortunately, the DMC-TS2 does not use the AA standard that we are familiar with with most digital cameras.
They use a proprietary format that you will need to purchase separately, but in my experience the charge on this battery stays much longer than what you would receive from a pair of disposable batteries. Additionally, the card takes SD slot memory, up to 16GB. This will hold quite a few pictures, so if you purchase a larger card, you shouldn’t need to swap it out at the beach and possibly risk ruining the integrity of your seals.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 Review – Warranty
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 offers a 1 year standard warranty camera, but it is possible to extend this base warranty up to three years by using SquareTrade services.
Don’t Take My Word For It…
My experiences with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 have been nothing less than stellar, but plenty of other people have been enjoying their camera as well. Here is what a few of the Amazon online customer reviews are saying about the camera:
“If you need a rugged, very waterproof camera, that is still small enough to go everywhere with you, AND takes great pictures, I would definitely recommend this one.”
“…this camera will be with me on all my future outdoor trips!”
“I found the controls very easy to set whether underwater, during the day and even at night.”
