Panasonic Lumix TS2 14.1 MP Waterproof Camera

Underwater photography is slightly different than traditional photography, so I knew when I took a trip to Brisbane, Australia this past summer, if I wanted to take some of the most stunning photographs of undersea life, I would need a reliable waterproof underwater digital camera that would stand up to rigorous use for the duration of my trip.

While many waterproof digital cameras are designed to withstand a dunking in the wet stuff, most are not designed to operate for any length of time under water without forking over a pretty penny.

When I began my research of underwater digital cameras, I was afraid I would have to pay a small fortune for the camera that would be capable of what I wanted it to do. However, I was highly pleased when I discovered that the waterproof Panasonic Lumix TS2 not only performs well underwater, but it is also shock-proof, freeze-proof, and dust-proof, all major benefits for any camera that will see a lot of use outdoors.

The Panasonic Lumix TS2 DMC Camera is for:

  2. Someone who is looking for an underwater camera that is Macintosh compatible.
  3. People that are looking for a shockproof camera would excellent underwater performance.
  4. People that are looking for an easy to use camera and great at capturing underwater images.

Picture Perfect.. Even Underwater

Of course, the main idea of having a camera you can operate underwater is taking gorgeous pictures of everything you see while snorkeling or diving. Panasonic has revamped their image capture technology in the Venus Engine HD II to include what they have dubbed Intelligent Resolution. What this technology does is detects the edges of the subject matter and then composes either detailed textures or gradation, according to the focus of the camera.

This allows you to take close up shots that are stunning, while avoiding light refracts that are common in underwater photography. This technology results in crisp and clear images, but it also extends to the movie recording function of the camera, for some of the sharpest recording underwater you will ever see.

I was highly pleased with the performance of my camera and since we never operated below the recommended depth of 33 feet, I never had to worry about pressure possibly causing the camera to malfunction. The image quality is truly superb, with the 14.1 mega-pixel lens really edging out the competition in other underwater cameras. Photographs taken by some of the Panasonic Lumix TS2’s competitors seemed blurry and fuzzy, which is exactly what I wanted to avoid.

Durability Means Everything

Aside from the outstanding picture quality, I am happy to report that the Panasonic Lumix TS2 lives up to its promise of being an extremely durable camera. The main thing I was concerned with in any underwater digital camera is the seals that surround the battery and the SD card bay.

Through frequent use and wear and tear, these seals often loosen and can result in leaks, which destroy the camera. This is especially true for camera models that do not perform well in salt water. The DMC-TS1, the predecessor to the Lumix DMC-TS2, was not meant to function in salt water and thus the seals could warp easily. Panasonic addressed this problem in the reboot and as such, the seals on the Panasonic Lumix TS2 seem to be of greater quality.

In addition to stronger seals, the camera has been made shock-proof, meaning it can be dropped a distance up to 6.6 feet without worry about the camera breaking. Of course, that is not to say the physical chassis won’t suffer some damage, but the internal workings of the camera will be fine.

Another nice addition to this model and the reason I chose it over other cameras was the fact that it is freeze proof. That means this camera can provide double the function, since it will be safe on your trips to the beach, as well as the ski slopes during the winter. For the price paid for the Panasonic Lumix TS2, this ability to withstand just about any environment is a welcome addition.

Accessories Included

The only downside of the Panasonic Lumix TS2 camera in my opinion is the fact that it requires a proprietary battery in order to function. While the batteries are not too expensive, you will need to make sure you have a spare and that you keep them fully charged for outings, that way you avoid changing the battery and breaking the integrity of the seal, possibly causing damage. The wrist strap included is nice, but I replaced it with a floating strap for extra security, just to be safe.

Care & Maintenance

The maintenance of the Panasonic Lumix TS2 is no harder than any other digital waterproof camera and how well you take care of your investment will determine how long it will continue to reward you with crystal clear images. The first rule of owning a digital waterproof camera is being prepared. Ensure that the battery is fully charged and the SD card is empty before you head out, so you do not have to break the seals on these bays in order to change either. That way you don’t run the risk of possibly getting water into the camera.

Once you get home with the camera after a long day at the beach, simply dunk it under the water to wash away any sand and grit, then give it a firm drying with a towel. I never opened my camera until the day afterward just to be sure all the excess water was gone and this seems to be working well for me. The seals are still perfectly intact and I feel as though this camera will last me for several more years down the road. The Lumix DMC-TS2 is backed by a one year warranty from Panasonic, but you can choose to extend this warranty for a moderate price by purchasing additional coverage from SquareTrade.

What Are Others Saying?
